In accordance with the Lord’s will, baptism is necessary for salvation, as in the Church herself that we enter by Baptism.
Through Baptism, we are given the privilege of being part of our Catholic community. In Baptism, we are given a share in God’s life; Baptism incorporates us in the Body of Christ. Through the waters of Baptism, we have been liberated from the slavery of sin in order to live life to the full.
The outpouring of the Spirit at baptism enables us to bring Christ to the World.
The Baptism Process
As the parents of a child being Baptised, you are called to prepare for Baptism by:
Renewing your commitment to Christ
Resolving to share your faith with your child, and
Showing this by living the faith.
The Baptism Program at our Parish has three components:
1. 'Belonging' Certification
Ascension Press' Belonging: Baptism in the Family of God is an online short-course that 'seeks to equip your child through the sacrament of Baptism'.
The course consists of short videos and quizzes that will help parents to 'go deeper into the meaning of this foundational sacrament of faith, the baptismal rite itself, the roles of parents and godparents, and the call of Christian family life'.
After completing the course, you will be issued a certificate of completion which you will be required to send to the Parish.
2. Preparation Session
The preparation session takes place on the third Tuesday of each month in the Parish Hall, at 2a Charles St, Ryde from 6:30pm to 8pm.
During this session, you will meet up with the other families who will be celebrating their child’s Baptism. You will also have the opportunity to explore the beautiful rituals and rich symbolism that make up the Sacrament of Baptism.
Our Baptismal team will walk you through the actual Baptism ceremony. You will also be given the chance to ask any questions that you have.
3. The Rite of Baptism
Baptisms are held at both St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Ryde and Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Gladesville.
Cost
To cover administration costs and to support the functioning of our parish, we ask for a $150 contribution from those families who are able to do so.
We kindly ask you to make this contribution at the end of the registration process on TryBooking.
Adult Baptisms
Baptism for adults involves a slightly different process to infants and school-aged children.
For information about adult baptisms, please visit our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program page.
Preparing and Getting Involved
Family Mass
A good way to prepare for the Sacrament of Baptism is to attend the weekend celebration of Mass. Family Mass is held at Our Lady Queen of Peace on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 5pm and at St Charles Borromeo Church on the 4th Sunday of each month at 10am. This is a great opportunity to connect with other families in the parish community, as a morning tea usually follows it.
Alternatively, in preparation for the sacrament, feel free to attend any of the Masses that occur over the weekend:
Our Lady Queen of Peace –Sat 5pm & Sun 9am
St Charles Borromeo – Sat 6pm & Sun 8am, 10am and 6pm
Play Group
Playgroups for young children and their parents are held at Our Lady Queen of Peace in the Parish Hall from 9 – 10:30am on a Wednesday morning during school term, and at St Charles Borromeo in the Parish Centre from 9 – 11am on a Thursday during school term (access via the hall/parish office entrance turn left and head downstairs).
The morning begins and ends with reflection for the parents. Please bring along morning tea for your child. There is an opportunity for painting, reading, free play and for the children to learn about God and their faith in a fun environment.
For more information, visit our Playgroups page on our website.
Other Sacraments
Baptism is only the beginning of the journey and in time, it is hoped that you will guide your child on to the next sacrament that is Reconciliation, then First Holy Communion and is available when your child is 8 years of age following by Confirmation in Year 6.
